UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, ST. JOSEPH MEDICAL CENTER

Covalus provided program management, equipment implementation, and transition planning services for a $60 million dollar expansion for their perioperative services program located in Baltimore, MD. Each phase of the program represents unique planning needs and changes for the staff. Our team worked directly with the front-line staff ensuring space is physically ready and operationally ready for clinical services. The University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center is a top surgical facility, performing more than 18,000 inpatient and outpatient procedures annually. The project completed in 2021.
The project includes an Innovation Center that will be used to innovate and test various process improvements to enhance patient safety. The planned use of this area is consistent with UM SJMC’s vision to be a national leader in patient safety and experience. The Innovation Center will house performance improvement staff in close proximity to clinical staff, allowing the two groups to work together. Staff will be able to simulate a patient care environment, with both an inpatient room and a surgical suite, but no patient care will be provided within the Innovation Center. Processes can be observed, studied, changed and tested in a “team environment” without taking inpatient beds or rooms out of service. Adjacent to this space is a control room housing computer programs and controls to simulate patient events and medical situations through use of
a computer.
